Charges: Man Accused Of Having 2 Wives In Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 41-year-old man from southern Minnesota is accused of getting married for a second time after not ending his first marriage, according to charges filed in Freeborn County Court.
Wayne Allen Demay is charged with bigamy in connection with the case. He told police he was drunk at his first wedding and does not remember getting married.
According to a complaint, his wife, B.A. Demay, called the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office on Nov. 21, 2011, after finding Wayne Demay and learning that he had already been married to someone else.
B.A. Demay told authorities she got married to Wayne Demay in Kentucky on Feb. 19, 2003. About 26 days after the marriage, Wayne Demay left town and has not been heard from since, according to the complaint. B.A. Demay said she had looked into his whereabouts and located him in Freeborn County in southern Minnesota.
She spoke with an official at the Freeborn County Recorder's Office, who told her Wayne Demay got married to another woman on May 1, 2010. She said she wanted to get remarried, but as far as she knew she was still married to Wayne Demay and needed to get a divorce.
When B.A. Demay learned he was in Freeborn County, she found out he had gotten married to a second woman, the complaint states.
B.A. Demay said she and Wayne don't have any children together. She had attempted to contact him and had spoken to the woman who claims to be his second wife, but they refused to talk to her and said she was wrong about the marriage.
B.A. Demay provided authorities with a marriage certificate which shows that they got married in Kentucky on Feb. 19, 2003. Authorities then went to the Freeborn County Recorder's Office and obtained a marriage certificate which shows that Wayne Demay got married a woman named C.A.F, now known as C.A. Demay, on May, 1, 2010, in Albert Lea.
Authorities went to Wayne Demay's home last November and questioned him about the matter. He admitted to police that he was married to B.A. Demay. He told police he was intoxicated at the time of their marriage and didn't remember the marriage. He also told police he didn't get a divorce and did get remarried to C.A. Demay.
Wayne Demay told police, according to the complaint, that he would get a divorce from B.A. Demay but did not have any money.
Police then contacted B.A. Demay and asked her if there was any way he was so intoxicated that he would not remember the marriage. She told police they had a large wedding and his family was there for it. They lived together for 26 days before he left without notice or explanation until she found him recently.
If convicted, Wayne Demay faces more than a year in prison and a $1,500 fine.
