Charges: Drunk Driver Found On Garage Roof
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 22-year-old Burnsville man is accused of drunk driving and attempting to hide from police on the roof of a garage near a set of townhomes, according to charges filed Wednesday in Dakota County Court.
Elliot Alexander Williams was charged with first-degree driving while impaired and fleeing a police officer in connection with the Nov. 3 incident.
According to a criminal complaint, Lakeville Police were parked in the entrance to Valley Lake Park when the observed a vehicle driven by a man later identified as Williams leave the parking lot at a high rate of speed and failing to signal a turn. The vehicle also failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of 160th Street and Garrett Avenue.
When police attempted to stop Williams, he slammed on his brakes and fled from the car on foot. Williams was eventually spotted on the roof of a set of townhomes and smelled of alcohol. A preliminary breath test showed he had a blood alcohol level in excess of .08, the legal limit for driving in Minnesota.
According to the complaint, Williams told police he was in big trouble because he was out on bail for another first-degree DUI and that he would be in trouble for driving a car without the ignition interlock system. That's a system where a car can only start after a person blows into a machine and their blood alcohol level is below the legal limit for driving.
Williams has had four previous incidents of driving while impaired since January of 2008. If convicted, he faces more than seven years in prison and $15,000 in fines.
