Charges: Daycare Provider Assaulted 11-Month-Old Baby
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A daycare provider in Wright County is accused of assaulting an 11-month-old child after the baby had a fractured leg, bruises and abrasions because the baby was "being fussy," according to charges filed Wednesday.
Robin Kay Rollag, 48 of Buffalo, was charged with three counts of third-degree assault, two counts of malicious punishment of a child and one count of child neglect in connection with the case.
According to the charges, the Wright County Sheriff's Office responded to the Buffalo Clinic on March 6 on a report of possible child abuse at a daycare. Doctors were examining a baby that "wasn't acting right" and discovered the baby had a fractured right tibia as well as other bruising and abrasions.
An X-ray showed the baby had a hairline fracture of the left tibia. The baby's mother brought the child in for a check-up after the she was unusually fussy, didn't want to crawl around and couldn't put any weight on her right foot, according to the complaint.
When Rollag, the daycare provider, was asked about the injuries, she said she didn't know what caused them and had no explanation. She later said they had gone sledding on a hill near her home and that they fell while going down a hill.
On Monday, Rollag met with authorities and told them she had intentionally hurt the baby because "she got to me." Rollag admitted to pushing the baby, causing a bruise on her head. Rollag said she was frustrated because the baby had a dirty diaper, according to the complaint.
Rollag also admitted to scratching the baby's stomach by pulling her out of an exersaucer and causing bruises on the baby by pinching her. The baby hurt her leg when Rollag said she tripped, dropped the baby and fell on top of her, the complaint states.
If convicted on the charges, which are all felonies, Rollag is facing up to 30 years in prison and up to $50,000 in fines.
