Ceremony Marks 150 Years Since Minn. Soldier Death

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota soldier killed in battle during the Civil War will have a special ceremony in his honor 150 years later.

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and members of the Minnesota Civil War Commemoration Task Force planned to hold a grave rededication ceremony for Lt. David Oakes at a St. Paul cemetery as part of Monday's Memorial Day observance.

Oakes was killed at the battle of Corinth, Mississippi. According to Ritchie's office, he's one of only four soldiers born in Minnesota who died during the Civil War.

He is buried at Oakland Cemetery. The cemetery is also the final resting place for six Minnesota governors, ten Civil War generals and more than 2,000 Civil War soldiers.
