Center For Kids With Down Syndrome Opens Saturday
ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (WCCO) -- This weekend there's a grand opening for a new place in the Twin Cities that's raising awareness about Down Syndrome.
But that really just scratches the surface of what Gigi's Playhouse has to offer. The center is in St. Louis Park and opens officially on Saturday. It's the first of its kind center with awareness and education for kids with Down Syndrome, and it gives kids a chance to have some fun.
In addition to an indoor playground where kids can get into different activities, there's a stage where kids can pretend they're performing in a theater. There's also a play area with plenty of toys and games.
Amy Jackson is one of eight mothers who will have a child at the facility. She says there's a huge need for a place like Gigi's Playhouse in the community.
"It's about raising awareness for children and individuals with Down Syndrome mostly. It's a place to gather, and we are program-based," Jackson said. "Kids can get into programs that are therapeutic and educational in nature. It's about gathering together and learning about socialization."
Officials say it's not a daycare, but a place that offers a variety of programs that are free. It's a volunteer-run facility, and in the near future it will offer literacy and math programs.
Gigi's Playhouse will host its grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Louis Park. It will go until 1 p.m. and is free to the public.
