CDC: Nearly All Contact-Wearers Engaging In Risky Behavior
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Do you wear contacts? According to a new survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you're engaging in risky behavior.
The CDC is not saying that the act of wearing contacts in and of itself constitutes a risky behavior, but rather said that nearly 100 percent of all people who wear contacts have admitted to engaging in at least one habit that could lead to eye infections.
The survey was conducted with nearly one-third of participating contact lens wearers admitting they went to the doctor for red or painful eyes related to wearing contacts.
The most commonly reported behavior that could potentially lead to eye infections was people keeping their contact lens cases for longer than recommended. Over 82 percent said they do that.
Nearly half of the respondents said that they either top off the solution in their case, or have kept their contacts in while sleeping.
"Taken together, the survey results indicate that millions of Americans could be at risk for serious eye infections because of poor contact lens hygiene behaviors," the CDC said in a release.
