Cassellius Talks Federal Waiver Request In Mankato
MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — State Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius is going to Mankato to discuss the state's request for a federal waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind law.
She's scheduled to speak from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota River Room, Mankato Intergovernmental Center, 10 Civic Center Plaza.
The waiver from the U.S. Department of Education would allow the state to swap the current system of school accountability, which uses a single high-stakes test, for a more nuanced system.
It would look at individual student growth, reductions to the achievement gap and graduation rates in addition to proficiency in certain academic subjects to create a rating for each Minnesota school.
Officials say the new system would do a better job of identifying the schools that need the most help.
