Cash-For-Gold Kiosks Popping Up At Twin Cities Grocery Stores
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Self-service kiosks are popping up to sell all sorts of things these days, from DVDs and video games at Redbox to even beer at Target Field.
Now, there's a new game in town -- Goldstur allows you to get cash for your gold in just a few minutes, and it's taking off in Minnesota.
The first one just popped up at a Stillwater Cub Foods, where users can exchange gold, steel, platinum or any precious metal for cash in just a few minutes. In fact, the Twin Cities metro is one of the only places in the world that you can currently find the kiosks.
"Someone can come in while they're shopping and, within two minutes, get an accurate bid for their item, without ever having to part with that item and knowing within two minutes what the value is," Goldstur COO Kevin Miller said.
Here's how it works: You pay $2 for the appraisal, scan your driver's license for security, drop your jewelry into the tray and wait a few minutes while the high-tech scanner determines how much the piece is worth. Then you can decide whether or not to accept the offer, and how you want to receive the money -- a receipt for cash, or a gift card.
While the idea of taking your gold to a grocery store for money might seem strange, Miller says it's quicker and more convenient than heading to a pawn shop or gold-buying storefront.
"It's well-lit, people feel safe and comfortable, they're already buying items -- we feel it's convenient," Miller said.
Miller says Goldstur isn't just another kiosk, it's one of a kind. The technology can't be found anywhere else in the world.
"In today's day and age, where there's so much technology, so many new ideas being created, it's very hard to create something that hasn't already been created or knocked off a dozen times," he said.
