Car Plunges Into Maple Grove Pond, No Injuries
MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) -- A distracted driver ended up in a Maple Grove pond Wednesday night near the Arbor Lakes Mall.
A Maple Grove Police Officer said a young man was fumbling with his iPod while driving on Arbor Lakes Parkway.
He lost control of his car just west of Hemlock Lane, jumped the curb and went straight into the water, authorities said. When WCCO-TV's crew got to the scene, the car was nearly fully submerged in the water, and the wiper blades were still running too.
The young man was able to get out of the small Toyota on his own and was not injured in the incident. The pond is only about four feet deep, according to police.
"That is sad. My heart breaks for that young man and his family. It's not life or death, but still, it's a difficult situation," said Janet Bendickson, a Maple Grove resident who witnessed the accident.
Video from an eyewitness showed the car almost fully submerged, and the boy being interviewed by police.
