LAKE MINNETONKA, Minn. (WCCO) -- A car fell through the ice Saturday in a channel between Gray's Bay and Wayzata Bay on Lake Minnetonka.
The driver of the vehicle called 911 to report the accident, and said that his 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix was sinking. According to Maj. Darrell Huggett, emergency personnel arrived minutes after the call.
"Deputies eventually dove on the vehicle and found two occupants inside: a male in his thirties and an elderly female. Both the male and the female were recovered from the vehicle, both transported to HCMC: one by air, one by land," Huggett said.
The pair where in 8 - 10 feet of water for more than an hour, and were unconscious and unresponsive when rescuers brought them to the surface. They are currently in critical condition.
According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's office, this is the fourteenth incident this winter of a car going through the ice on Lake Minnetonka.
Deputies remind drivers to always wear a life jacket while walking or driving a car, truck or snowmobile on frozen lakes. And channels should be avoided altogether. They often appear to be frozen, but the flowing water causes the ice to be weak.
