State Capitol's Quadriga Removed For Roof Replacement
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – One of the most iconic features of the Minnesota State Capitol is being temporarily taken down.
Removal of the gold-leafed Quadriga began around noon on Saturday, according to the Minnesota Department of Administration. The statue is being temporarily removed to accommodate roof replacement.
Officials are also taking this time to thoroughly assess the condition of the Quadriga. Though it receives yearly maintenance, the last time the condition was comprehensively assessed was over two decades ago.
The Quadriga has been on the Capitol since 1906. It was sculpted by Daniel Chester French and Edward Potter.
The four horses represent elements: Earth, water, fire and wind, according to the Minnesota Historical Society. The women represent civilization and the man on the chariot represents prosperity.
