Canterbury Park Offers $2 Million Purse For American Pharoah
SHAKOPEE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota's Canterbury Park is hoping it has a shot at hosting horse racing's new Triple Crown star.
The Shakopee track says it's prepared to put up $2 million to attract American Pharoah, in what it says would be the largest purse offered this summer in North American horse racing.
The horse's owner, Ahmed Zayat has pledged to keep the colt in training, at least through the end of the year. Zayat says he'll leave selection of the next race to trainer Bob Baffert.
Among the races under consideration are the Jim Dandy and Travers races at Saratoga in upstate New York and the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth in New Jersey.
Canterbury Park said Thursday the Mystic Lake Derby race would be Aug. 30.
