Canterbury Park Cancels Fourth Of July Racing, Events
SHAKOPEE, Minn. (WCCO) -- Extreme temperatures and intense heat have forced all live racing and Fourth of July festivities to be canceled at Canterbury Park.
Officials made the announcement Tuesday, saying the events will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 7.
Canterbury Park President Randy Sampson said the dangerously high temperatures and heat indices for Wednesday -- predicted to be about 100 degrees -- led them to the decision to cancel.
"The health of both our equine and human athletes, as well as our race fans is always our primary concern. After consulting with Chief State Veterinarian Dr. Lynn Hovda, we have determined it is in everyone's best interests to cancel tomorrow's races," he said.
The traditional Fourth of July events -- free hot dogs, a wiener dog race and a hot dog eating contest -- will be made up on Saturday, starting at 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday's race card and fireworks show will go on as planned.
