Camp For Young Cadets Underway
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- More than 100 Civil Air Patrol cadets are getting a taste of military life during a nine-day emergency services training camp in South Dakota.
The Joint Dakota Emergency Services Cadet Encampment gives the youth a chance to prepare for rescue missions.
Cadets from the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wyoming and Montana are taking part in the camp, which started Saturday and runs through this coming Sunday. The cadets are typically newer or lower-ranking members.
Senior members oversee the camp, which alternates yearly between Camp Grafton, N.D., and Camp Rapid, S.D., both Army National Guard bases.
Capt. Preston Lee, the cadet commander, says the camp gives cadets confidence because they learn how to succeed.
The Civil Air Patrol is a nonprofit organization that performs rescue missions.
