Crews To Work All Night To Contain Mpls. Gas Leak
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Buildings and homes were evacuated as a precaution in south Minneapolis Wednesday afternoon after fire officials detected natural gas following a report of a leak.
Workers at a grain elevator at 35th Street and Hiawatha Avenue called 911 to report a strong smell of natural gas at about 4:30 p.m., according to a CenterPoint Energy spokesperson.
Minneapolis Fire crews did not detect a leak in the grain elevator, but did find a leak on the street nearby.
Buildings on 35th Street were evacuated and monitored, as well as three homes in the area. Everyone was allowed back inside after the leak's source was detected.
Hiawatha Avenue was shut down between 31st Street and 38th Street as a precaution for about two hours.
All roads have reopened with the exception of two blocks of 35th Street, which remain closed until the leak is contained.
CenterPoint Energy officials say crews will work through the night to fix the problem, and the public is not at risk.
