Brooklyn Park Police Warn Of Series Of Burglaries

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (WCCO) -- Police say several burglaries have been happening while homeowners were sleeping in two specific areas of Brooklyn Park on the east side of the city.

Inspector Todd Milburn said in all the cases, which stretch back through last month, the suspect or suspects have gotten into the homes through unlocked doors or windows.

They have all taken place at night.

"Two nights ago, we had a victim of a burglary who saw a suspect inside her home at the time of the burglary and confronted the suspect and the suspect fled," Milburn said. "No arrests were made but again this emphasizes the importance of securing your property before you go to sleep."

Milburn said they believe the same person or persons are responsible for the crimes.

"The MO lines up with both patterns at this point and time. We are led to believe we are dealing with the same suspects but we are investigating to firm that up," he said.

Milburn said if someone is in your home, you should call police right away. He said sometimes people wait, and call a neighbor first.

"If they can do it without the suspect knowing, that's ideal. But if not, if they can leave and find a safe place to call, that's OK too," he said.

A crime alert has been issued recommending residents take the following steps to secure property:

-- Lock all doors and windows.
-- If you have an alarm system, make sure it's on at all times.
-- Turn on exterior lights at night
-- Talk to neighbors.
