Brooklyn Center Passes Proposed Levy After 8 Attempts
BROOKLYN PARK (WCCO) -- Voters in the Brooklyn Center School District Tuesday approved the renewing of the district's operating levy 513 to 196. It's a move that means taxpayers will continue to provide the same amount per student.
"We are so grateful that our community approved this levy renewal," said School Board Chair Cheryl Jechorek. "Stable sources of funding are critical to our ability to provide students with quality educational programming."
Voters have defeated eight straight levies put on the ballot in Brooklyn Center.
The operating levy, which is now extended for 10 more years, will cost taxpayers about $50 dollars a month. The renewal will continue to provide $337 per student, which represents approximately $600,000.
According to district officials, the renewal still doesn't solve the district's overall financial challenges due to "stagnant state funding and increasing educational costs."
