Brooklyn Center Man Pleads Guilty In Teen's Shooting Death
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 19-year-old Brooklyn Center man has pleaded guilty to the shooting death of his friend, 16-year-old Terrence Creamer, according to Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
On Thursday, Deshawn Roberts pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in the April 24 death of Creamer during a shooting at Central Park in Brooklyn Park.
According to the criminal complaint, a group of people were in the park that evening for a barbeque when an argument occurred. Several people went to the parking lot where Roberts was going to fight one of the other young men. During the argument, Roberts left the group, grabbed a gun and started shooting in the parking lot.
One of the bullets hit his friend, Creamer, in the head. Creamer died five days later.
Roberts is expected to receive 252 months in prison, which is an "upward departure from the sentencing guidelines, which the county attorney's office asked for because the shooting endangered others in the park," according to the attorney's office.
"When a young man wildly fires more than a half-dozen shots and leaves one person dead, we push for long prison terms," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. "We were perfectly willing to go to trial unless we got the kind of sentence that justice demands. We have to make the consequences of using a gun so severe that people will think twice before using one."
Roberts' sentencing is set for Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
