Braham Guard Sinks 4,000 Points, Continues Winning Legacy
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Her resume is hard to ignore.
Braham senior guard Rebekah Dahlman averages 35 points a game, leads the state in free throws made, and she's won a state title. And last week she joined elite company.
A simple free throw at the end of an "and 1" against Park Center was a milestone basket. It was career point number 4,000.
"And after I made my free throw, they announced it…and I was like, oh OK," Dahlman said.
Because she's so focused on her team and winning, her coach Tim Malone says she initially had no idea what happened.
"I don't think she had 4,000 points even close to the back of her mind, as far as that game goes," Malone said.
Four thousand points is a lot for anyone. But for the Dahlman family, it's simply another accomplishment.
Dahlman's grandfather once coached the Minneapolis Lakers. Her dad was a state championship winning coach at Braham. Each of her five siblings has done pretty well, too. Her older brothers won state titles at Braham. Isaiah Dahlman played on a Final Four team at Michigan State. And Noah Dahlman took Wofford College to its first-ever national tournament.
But no one in her family has ever reached 4,000 points.
Nevertheless, Dahlman's biggest thrill might have been winning Braham's first-ever girls state title with her sister Hannah in 2011.
"They would push me to the max. Everyone. My sister, my dad. There has been so much support, and I couldn't have done it without them," Dahlman said.
And she might not be done achieving yet. In a couple games, Dahlman could become the state's all-time leading scorer for boys or girls. The record is 4,086 points, held by Kevin Noreen. He played at Minnesota Transitions Charter School and is currently playing for West Virginia University.
Dahlman is committed to play at Vanderbilt next year.
