Boyd Nets Hat Trick, Gophers Sweep Ohio State
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Travis Boyd netted his first career hat trick Saturday night as the Gophers men's hockey team beat Ohio State 6-2 to complete a weekend sweep.
Boyd led Minnesota on the weekend with four goals and an assist and now also leads the Gophers in scoring with 13 goals. The Gophers beat the Buckeyes 4-2 Friday night to start the weekend. Minnesota went 3-for-4 on the power play Saturday night and with nine power-play goals in their last five games, the Gophers lead the nation on the man advantage with a .291 goal percentage.
Boyd scored more than six minutes into Saturday's contest, and about 30 seconds later, Hudson Fasching scored to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead.
Boyd scored his second goal of the night nine seconds into the second period and completed the hat trick at the 14:16 mark of the second period.
Adam Wilcox earned the win in net, the 65th of his career, and now sits alone in fourth place in program history. Wilcox stopped 16 shots Saturday as Minnesota outshot Ohio State 28-18.
The Gophers host Michigan next weekend for a pair of games at Mariucci Arena.
