Boy, 8, Rescued From Icy Plunge Into Pond
OAK GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) -- An 8-year-old boy and his siblings ventured out onto a thin coating of ice in Oak Grove when he plunged in.
He'll be OK but deputies say the incident is enough to issue a warning to stay off the ice.
"Stay off the ice. It's only been cold a couple of days now. The lakes aren't even frozen, some of the ponds, the smaller bodies of water, are starting to get a covering of ice on them, but it's not safe," said Anoka County Deputy Tim Sink.
Jaydin Bollmann and his siblings learned that lesson the hard way when they decided to move from the snow to the ice.
"We were bored and the snow was melting," said Spencer Fairbanks, Jaydin's brother. "I told him to run back cause I could hear it cracking."
Jaydin fell in and the water was up to his chest. That's when Jaydin's sister, Kaia Bollmann, ran back for their father, Brent Bollman.
"When I got there he was standing in the middle of the pond, about chest-high in water, hanging on to the ice," said Brent.
Spencer yelled for a neighbor, who first brought a 2x4 piece of wood. When Jaydin couldn't hold onto that, they grabbed a leash.
Jaydin spent about 15 minutes in chest-deep water. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids around 4 p.m. and was released around 8 p.m.
Jaydin's mother says he's doing OK, just shaken up.
The DNR recommends four inches of clear ice before walking on any body of water. The Anoka Sheriff's Office said lakes are far from that at this time.
Deputies warn ice is never safe, but if you plan to go out later this winter, carry ice picks and a rope to make sure you can get out, if you fall in.
