Former Club Bouncer Sentenced To 70 Months For Tax Fraud
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A former bouncer at a Maplewood nightclub will spend 70 months in prison for filing fradulent tax returns.
A judged sentenced 47-year-old John Hunter in federal court Monday. A jury found him guilty after a four-day trial in December of last year.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, it was proven in court that in 2009 Hunter fraudulently claimed more than $200,000 in tax refunds that he wasn't entitled to. Prosecutors said Hunter claimed an $8,000 refund from a $13,000 income as a bouncer at Club Rage in Maplewood. His actual earnings were closer to $4,000, and no taxes were withheld from his paycheck.
Hunter also filed dozens of fraudulent tax returns on behalf of friends and acquaintances, including minors. Those tax returns also exaggerated or falsifying the level of income.
The IRS finally rejected several of his fraudulent claims in 2012.
