Both Sides Weigh In On The Gay Marriage Amendment
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The same-sex marriage debate heated up with the presidential candidates. It also stirred up emotions here in Minnesota.
President Barack Obama made history this week by saying he supports marriage equality for same-sex couples.
Obama said the issue has come up at his own family's dinner table. The President says his daughters, Malia and Sasha, have friends who have same-sex couples for parents.
Republican rival Mitt Romney is against gay marriage. At a commencement speech Saturday, he reaffirmed his stance.
"Culture, what you believe, what you value, how you live, matters. Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman," he said.
A new USA Today Gallup poll says 40 percent of Americans say President Obama's support of gay marriage will affect their votes.
Of the people surveyed -- 26 percent say it will make them less likely to vote for Obama, while 13 percent say it will make them more likely to vote for him.
In November, Minnesotans will go to the polls to vote on a proposed ban on same-sex marriage.
