State Patrol: 2 Seriously Hurt In I-494 Crash Near Minnesota River

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say multiple people were injured in a crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 494 in Bloomington, likely due to icy conditions.

The Bloomington Fire Department responded to the crash shortly after 5 a.m. on I-494 over the Minnesota River bridge. The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened on westbound Interstate 494 near Highway 5 over the Minnesota River bridge. The Bloomington Fire Department responded to the scene to help with prolonged extrication of at last one victim.

The State Patrol says a driver exited a vehicle to speak with another driver after a crash. A pedestrian was then hit by another motorist. The State Patrol says two people were seriously hurt in the crash, including one person who was ejected from the striking vehicle.

Both crash victims were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with serious injuries.

The State Patrol says the temperature was -15 at the time of the crash, and there was black ice on the road.

Authorities say roads in the area are very slippery, especially on ramps and bridges, due to black ice.

The State Patrol says from midnight to noon, there were 241 crashes. Of those, 31 involved injuries and two were serious-injury crashes. There were also 68 vehicles that either spun out or went off the road.
