Big Sandy Lake Residents Getting Hit Hard By Flooding
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Some are calling this round of flooding along the Ponderosa point of Big Sandy Lake the worst since 1950.
Mark Olsen, a retiree from the Twin Cities, tells WCCO Radio he's been lucky so far.
"In 1950 the water came up to the middle of my first floor windows," he said.
Olsen says he is just watching the flood waters with a weary eye. His neighbor's home is already flooded.
"One corner of my house is under water, and we are just holding our breath," Olsen said.
Resident Joel Kubelbeck Is using a canoe to help out his neighbors who've been flooded out. Not only are literally dozens of homes flooded out from the basements to their first floors, but there is an extreme danger for boats with the big sandy resembling a floating scrapyard with debris including firewood, docks, lawn chairs and other loose property flooring just above the waves.
There will be a public meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the city hall in Hill City for residents to voice concerns and hear the latest news on clean up and preparedness. At Grace Lutheran Church in McGregor, staff is on hand at 9 a.m. handing out relief supplies.
