President Lincoln intervenes at the urging of missionary Henry Whipple and commutes the sentences of 264 Dakota people after a military court tried 303 men for raping and murdering civilians in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Nevertheless, Lincoln signs the order for hanging another 39 Dakota, giving Minnesota the dubious distinction of hosting the largest mass execution in U.S. history.
