St. Paul is home to a quaint little donut shop on the corner called Mojo Monkey. Started by some bakers that understand the art of the donut, Mojo Monkey often runs out of their day's batch early in the morning. Enjoy a non-pretentious cake donut with rainbow sprinkles or a fancy maple bacon one. Mojo is creative and fun, serving up all handmade and original varieties from plain to outrageous. Their attention to detail is obvious and their coffee is also a hit.

The home of traditional donuts may just be the most untraditional thing right now. While everyone's going crazy for odd combinations like cayenne pepper donuts and peanut butter apple, The Donut Hut keeps it simple. While not necessarily untraditional, it would be a sin not to include this hidden gem in a donut list. Donut Hut is a ma and pa type of shop that bakes their goods fresh every morning at 4 a.m. and has a line out the door until they're gone. Get some of the freshest apple fritters, bismarks and glazed delights you've ever had.

Duluth is home to a bakery that has been turning out delicious donuts for over 60 years. Johnson's Bakery makes the best of all kinds of sweets but really excels at making a memorable donut. Aside from the traditional long johns and glazed goodies, they use seasonal ingredients to create seasonal and unique flavors you can only get at certain times of the year. Try the fall applesauce donut or the Thanksgiving pumpkin donut. Year round, cake donuts and donut holes are the way to go. These guys are so good that the original bakers are immortalized in the Minnesota Bakers Hall of Fame.

Delightful cookies, cakes, bread, and...donuts of course! A Baker's Wife is that old-school corner bakery that makes everything fresh and puts 100 percent pride into their art. Unlike the new donut shops popping up around town, A Baker's Wife doesn't charge a fortune for a donut. Go early and get a fresh, still warm cinnamon sugar donut for under a dollar! Make sure you bring cash though, this place is cash only.

I know, this donut shop is not in Minnesota, but it's close. Close enough to actually see Minnesota from the shop. It is so fabulous, A Dozen Excuses belongs on this list. Fresh and fantastic, unusual donuts and the regulars; whatever you get you will love it. The strawberry donut has pieces of strawberry in it and they have great varieties that include a Butterfinger donut and a Reese's donut. And they have great coffee to go with your hot and fresh treat.
