Barkhad Abdi, Bill Pohlad Nominated For Oscars
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (WCCO/AP) -- Minnesota was once again well represented when the 86th annual Academy Award nominations were announced in Beverly Hills, Calif., by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Barkhad Abdi, who now-famously worked as a limo driver in Minneapolis before being discovered by the makers of "Captain Phillips," was nominated for best supporting actor.
Barkhad Abdi and three other amateur Somali actors from Minnesota portray pirates who hijack an American cargo ship off the Horn of Africa in 2009 and take its captain, played by Hanks, hostage. Abdi is the pirates' ringleader.
Appearing on NBC's Today show Thursday, Abdi said he was so excited about the imminent Oscar nominations that he couldn't sleep Wednesday night.
Also, producer Bill Pohlad was among the people behind Best Picture nominee "12 Years a Slave." He was previously nominated in that category for "The Tree of Life." He also served as an executive producer for "Brokeback Mountain."
And Amy Adams, whose career first took off when she acted at the Chanhassen Dinner Theaters in the late 1990s, just received her fifth Oscar nomination. She was cited in the Best Actress category for her performance in "American Hustle," which led the overall nomination count along with "Gravity." The most nominated films of the morning were:
10 nominations: American Hustle; Gravity
9 nominations: 12 Years a Slave
6 nominations: Captain Phillips; Dallas Buyers Club; Nebraska
5 nominations: Her; The Wolf of Wall Street
