Bachmann Broadens Muslim Brotherhood Allegations
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Rep. Michele Bachmann has accused a fellow Minnesota congressman, Democrat Keith Ellison, of having associations with the Muslim Brotherhood, a fundamentalist group with political strength in Egypt.
Bachmann's allegations came Thursday during an interview with conservative commentator Glenn Beck. The Minnesota Republican has been under criticism from lawmakers in both parties for insinuating that a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has family ties to the group.
Ellison, who represents a district adjacent to Bachmann's, has condemned her remarks about alleged State Department infiltration as akin to McCarthyism. Bachmann now says Ellison, a Muslim, has "a long record of being associated" with the Muslim Brotherhood, as she put it on Beck's program. Ellison rejects the assertion.
Bachmann has not fulfilled an interview request from The Associated Press.
