Brooklyn Center Woman Gives Birth On Highway
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Abby Vanyo and Jacob Schindler were on their way to have their baby Monday around 6:30 a.m. when Vanyo began to feel sharp pains.
The couple had a 15 minute drive from their home in Brooklyn Center to the Mother Baby Center in Minneapolis, but their baby was ready to come into the world almost immediately when they hit the road.
"It was a half hour from waking up and that first contraction to me holding her," Schindler said.
"I told him he had to pull over and call 911 because she was coming," Vanyo said.
They pulled off just before the West Broadway exit along Interstate 94 and Schindler was suddenly in charge of helping deliver his daughter.
"I was thinking, 'I hope I don't drop the baby,'" Schindler joked.
"I was a little bit worried but I didn't want to get too worried because I didn't want to stress myself out or her," Vanyo said.
A couple of state troopers and a Minneapolis firefighter showed up almost immediately.
"As they were approaching the car is when her water broke, and they actually were really good about it," Schindler said. "One went to the other side of the car so he could talk to Abby."
With the help of the troopers and firefighter the couple had the baby in the back seat.
A few minutes later, paramedics arrived to take the family to the hospital.
"She let out a loud enough yell that we knew she was fine," Vanyo said about the baby.
Griffon Schindler was perfectly healthy.
The couple has another three-year-old daughter.
Law enforcement made sure someone was able to pick up their car from the side of the road so it would not be towed.
