Authorities Investigate Death Of Glenwood Firefighter

GLENWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) – Authorities are trying to figure out what caused the death of a Glenwood firefighter on Monday, Fire Chief Dale Danter confirmed on Tuesday.

The Pope County Dispatch received a 911 call at about 6:46 p.m. Monday of an unresponsive person at the Glenwood Fire Department. When authorities arrived, they found 23-year-old Matthew Chan, a member of the Glenwood Fire Department, unresponsive and not breathing.

Members of the Glenwood Fire Department, Glacial Ridge Ambulance and Glenwood Police Department administered first aid, and Chan was eventually transported to Glacial Ridge Hospital.

He was later pronounced dead. The exact cause of Chan's death remains under investigation. Authorities wouldn't say if his death was heat-related. Glenwood is located a few hours northwest of the Twin Cities, south of Alexandria.
