Chemical Spill At Mpls. Water Works
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are looking into what caused a chemical spill at the Minneapolis Water Works facility Tuesday afternoon, according to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office.
The dispatch center got a call about the incident at about 1:08 p.m. on the 4500 block of Reservoir Boulevard in Columbia Heights. The Columbia Heights Fire Department was the first to arrive on scene. Authorities said fire officials were told of a chemical emergency that had been contained to one area of the facility. Authorities said the spill happened when two chemicals, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda, were accidentally mixed together.
Officials said the spill was contained to the facility's acid room. The building was evacuated, but there were no injuries reported at the scene and there is no threat to the community or the water supply.
Columbia Heights fire officials were assisted at the scene by the Fridley and St. Anthony Fire Departments as well as the Minneapolis Fire Department's Hazardous Materials response crew.
