Authorities Warn Drivers After Truck Breaks Through Ice
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are urging people – yet again -- to be cautious on all lakes due to thin ice and open water after a pickup truck broke through the ice Saturday on Lake Minnetonka.
The pickup truck, which was carrying two men, broke through the ice on Smith's Bay and became submerged. The men escaped through the truck's windows and made it to shore. They suffered no injuries, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities called Saturday's incident a reminder that ice thickness is variable due to the recent warm weather. They said that the open water areas and channels on Lake Minnetonka are extremely dangerous.
They are urging people to also keep an eye on their kids and keep their dogs on leashes. Authorities said they've responded to incidents where pet owners put themselves at risk after their pets wander out onto unsafe ice.
