Apple Valley Junior Makes 112 Saves In Varsity Hockey Game
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Apple Valley varsity girl's hockey season ended Wednesday night after a whopping nine periods. But before the final buzzer, the Eagle's goalie nearly made high school hockey history.
Junior Taylor DeForrest woke up today to tweets from all around the world.
"A couple of NHL people, Hall of Fame people," she said.
Her hockey team lost their final game of the season, but this is one game no one was paying attention to the final score.
"I had 115 shots, so 112 saves," said DeForrest. "I assumed it was 50 or 60, nothing big. At the end of the game when we were shaking hands, they said I had 112 saves. And I was mind blown."
No wonder hockey greats were sending virtual pats on the back.
"I can't explain it in words. It was the most bizarre, wild, incredible thing I've seen at a hockey rink," Head Coach Don Erdall said.
It was a seemingly never-ending hockey game that went into overtime six times. DeForrest was in the net the whole time.
"I've never seen any goal tender play like that," Erdall said. "High school goal tenders make mistakes. NHL goal tenders make mistakes. And she didn't last night."
The final score was 3-2, East Ridge taking the win from Apple Valley. Despite the loss and spending nearly five hours on the ice, Coach Erdall says they went out on a high note.
"It was pretty bitter sweet in the locker room," DeForrest said. "He was proud in that we never gave up. That was our biggest thing this season: never give up no matter where you are at."
DeForrest came very close to a state record for saves in a girl's hockey game - just six shots shy of the record 118 stops set in 2007.
