Another Round Of Protests In Mpls. Sunday
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Sunday marked another day of protests in Minneapolis.
The protesters are joining a nationwide effort to demonstrate against what they consider police brutality. It follows the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two men who were killed by police officers. In both cases, grand juries reviewed the evidence and did not indict the officers.
There are a lot of noises to be heard at TCF Bank Stadium on a game day, but on this day, there were extra sounds as protesters stood together outside and stood against police brutality.
Some planned to make noise, like Joshua Lawrence of Minneapolis, who showed up with his two young children.
"It's important that my kids and kids anywhere should be working for this and come out and stand for what's right," Lawrence said.
Others just happened upon the protest, like Sharn Kind who was on her way to the game when she joined in.
"Yes, because I wanted a Viking -- an obvious Viking fan -- to be part of the crowd," Kind said.
Not all Viking fans were on board and some scoffed at the crowd, but there was no violence.
Fan Sam Farington of Bloomington said he supported the crowd.
"I don't know how effective they are, but I think they have the right to do so and it's effective for them, they obviously wanting to voice their opinion and I think they have the right to do so," Farington said.
Unlike this crowd of several dozen, crowds were much larger in other cities. There was a Sunday post-church protest in Chicago and Saturday, tear gas was used to calm crowds in Berkeley, California.
Also in Minneapolis Sunday, crowds stayed calm as protesters once again assembled at the Hennepin County Library in downtown Minneapolis.
Sunday is not the last of the protests in Minnesota. Next Saturday at 1 p.m. there is another rally planned at Government Plaza in Minneapolis.
