Another Day Of Dangerous Cold In Minnesota
DULUTH, Minn. (AP/WCCO) — Tuesday temps in Minnesota barely made it above zero.
The dangerous cold has some school districts canceling classes Tuesday and others delaying start times by two hours. Duluth, Ely, Esko and Hermantown were among the districts telling students to stay home.
Forecasters say Monday's high of 10 below zero in Duluth was the coldest temperature recorded there since February 2007.
The extreme cold means a busy day for AAA Minneapolis. Spokesman Matt Hehl says they handled about 900 calls from motorists Monday — about twice the normal volume.
"I am wearing a Snuggie under a top and another jacket over that," said Faye Whitbeck, president of the chamber of commerce in International Falls, Minn., a town near the Canadian border where the temperature was minus 30 on Tuesday morning. The anticipated high was a balmy 8 below. "I pulled out a coat that went right to my ankles this morning and I wore two scarves."
The coldest location in the lower 48 states Monday was Embarrass, Minn., at 36 below. On Sunday it was Babbitt, Minn., at 29 below, according to the National Weather Service.
The Wells Fargo Winter Skate in Rice Park in downtown St. Paul only closes when the wind chill dips below 25. So with Tuesday opening at 19 degrees, it stayed open. But while 50 to 100 people usually hit the ice, just three showed up.
