Anglers Gear Up For Fishing Opener

MINNETONKA, Minn. (WCCO) -- The Minnesota fishing opener is just hours away, and local anglers were busy getting ready at various spots on Friday.
The Cabela's store in Rogers was filled with fisherman ready to get their rods, reels and lures to work.
Out on Lake Minnetonka, outdoors enthusiasts battled chilly temperatures to get their boats ready for the biggest fishing day of the year in Minnesota. Many got their boats out on the water to try and get an early look at where the fish are, but the first cast can't come until the stroke of midnight.
Fishing can also be a big boost to the local economy. The sport brings an estimated $4.7 billion to Minnesota's economy.
Gov. Mark Dayton will be among thousands out on the state's lakes Saturday morning. He purchased his fishing license this week and will be out on Lake Pokegama in Grand Rapids.
For some, it's time to spend with friends and family while enjoying the outdoors. For most men, it's an excuse to have an adult beverage and be a bachelor for the day. Whatever the reason, the fishing opener is one of the largest annual events in Minnesota.
