American Queen To Compete In Great Steamboat Race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- The American Queen steamboat will take part in the 50th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby Festival's Great Steamboat Race next year, along with the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati.

The jumbo steamboat will begin a series of three- to 10-night cruises next April, with stops in Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Chattanooga, St. Louis, Minneapolis/St. Paul and New Orleans, The Courier-Journal reported. The boat's home port is the Beale Street Landing in Memphis.

The American Queen is a six-deck re-creation of a classic Mississippi riverboat and is the only authentic overnight paddlewheel sailing in the U.S. It was launched in 1995 and is undergoing a $5 million renovation.
