Allina Health Terminating Lease With McDonald's At Abbott Northwestern
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Changes are being made at Allina Health to offer healthier options for food. Next spring, it will close the McDonald's inside Abbott Northwestern. But that's just the start.
The McDonald's at Abbott has been very popular because there aren't a lot of quick food choices when you're visiting someone in the hospital. But Allina is terminating its lease with the fast-food chain on May 31 of next year.
Starting Jan. 1, 2016, Allina will also get rid of all sugar sweetened drinks and deep fried foods in all of its 13 hospitals and more than 90 clinics.
The President and CEO of Allina Health said "as an organization focused on health, it is our responsibility to model and encourage healthy choices."
Allina says eating and drinking too much sugar increases the risk for obesity, diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. And it says deep-fried foods are usually high in the fats that are bad for health.
Allina says it is going to add new, healthier cafeteria and food service options.
