Al Franken Slams Trump Following Statements On Sen. McCain
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota Democratic Sen. Al Franken condemned on Monday remarks by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who said former prisoner of war and Sen. John McCain is "not a war hero."
And Franken said similar remarks he made more than a decade ago on his radio program were "a joke."
Trump is not apologizing, and his McCain comments may or may not have been serious.
But Franken said pretty much the same thing in 2004 on his liberal radio show, when McCain was his guest on the program.
"I made a joke," Franken said, adding that McCain thought it was funny.
On Monday, Franken called McCain "an amazing hero", and said McCain's five and-a-half years of confinement and torture in a Vietnamese prison camp are inspiring.
"I don't know what is going through Donald Trump's head, or through his hair for that matter," Franken told reporters.
"I condemn him for a lot of things that he said," Franken added. "I actually don't know what is going through his head at any one time."
