MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air quality alert for parts of Minnesota lasting through Tuesday afternoon.

The alert affects much of eastern Minnesota as well as the tribal nations of Prairie Island and Mille Lacs. Much of Wisconsin is also affected.

Smoke from wildfires in Quebec prompted the alert. The MPCA said smoke crossed into eastern Minnesota late Sunday morning, and will make its way west.

The MPCA expects the air quality index to reach the "code red" levels in parts, which means the air is unhealthy for all, including sensitive groups.

The alert went into effect at noon Sunday and has since been expanded. It's now set to expire at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
