After Guthrie Run, 'Scottsboro Boys' up for Tonys
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A show that ran at Minneapolis' Guthrie Theater last summer is up for 12 Tony Awards Sunday night.
"The Scottsboro Boys" had the second-most Tony nominations this season. "The Book of Mormon" had the most, with 14.
"The Scottsboro Boys" is about nine young black men who were unfairly accused of raping two white women in Alabama in the 1930s. The musical was the last collaboration of composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb of "Chicago" and "Cabaret" fame.
After appearing at the Guthrie, "The Scottsboro Boys" headed to Broadway, where it closed after only 49 regular performances.
Other Guthrie alums up for Tonys include actress Hannah Yelland and sound designer Simon Baker. Both are nominated for their work on Kneehigh Theatre's "Brief Encounter," which played at the Guthrie last year.
