Acme Comedy Co.: Proposed Luxury Apts. Will Put Club In 'Instant Peril'
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The owner of Acme Comedy Company says the club will be forced to close and relocate after nearly 25 years of business if a proposed luxury apartment development is approved.
According to Acme, owner of Solhem companies, Curt Gunsbury, proposed an eight-story 124 apartment complex on 721 North 1st Street. The ground-breaking is planned for July.
That would eliminate 130 parking spots across from the club in an area already lacking parking, Acme says.
"I have owned and operated Acme Comedy Company for nearly 25 years," Acme owner Louis Lee said. "I love the substantial growth that I have seen in the North Loop and welcome new neighbors openly, but the bottom line is this proposed apartment complex will drive my guests away. The people who want to see comedy and see shows at Acme Comedy Co. here will no longer come because the parking situation will be a nightmare."
Now, the locally-owned comedy club wants the parking issue resolved by the developer and the city of Minneapolis.
The club is also urging people to sign its petition, "Acme Comedy Co. must stay in Minneapolis! Protect the charm & character of the North Loop!", and is encouraging Minneapolis residents to attend the June 27 City Planning Commission meeting and lend their voice.
The club, located on 708 North 1st Street, has featured many prominent comedians, including Louis C.K., Kevin Smith, Robin Williams and more.
