A Prom To Remember: McDonald's And 2 Special Dates
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The dress, dinner and dance may not be as fun on prom night without the perfect date.
So when it came time, two Minnesota girls knew just who to ask. Their prom dates were part of the special education program at Litchfield High School.
Seth Becker has autism and his best friend Chris Fischer has Down syndrome.
Seth, 16, is a junior at the school, and Miranda Springer asked him to prom. The two went with Chris and his date, Kaitlyn.
Before the dance, the couples went out to the boys' favorite restaurant – McDonald's. There, they had a candle-lit dinner for four under the golden arches.
They arrived to the dance in a white Dodge Charger limousine. The night's theme was Candy Land, and both Seth and Chris walked the grand march with their dates in hand.
While the dance ended at 10 o'clock sharp, it was a prom the boys' mothers said they'll never forget.
"Once you become part of his life, and he falls in love with you, you are forever a part of that life," said Michelle Fischer, Chris's mom.
Miriam Ackman, Seth's mom, began to cry as she spoke of how happy she was that her son went to prom and had fun "like everybody else."
Miranda said she didn't ask Seth to prom out of pity. She asked him because she wanted a prom to remember.
"It almost makes me emotional, because I'm just doing this because Seth is a great guy, and I want him to be able to have a great time, just like I've been able to have a good time. And so I want to make a difference in peoples' lives, and this is only one little way that I can do it," Miranda said.
She added: "I wouldn't want to spend my prom any other way."
Next year, Miranda is going to Minnesota State University--Mankato where she hopes to get a teaching degree to one day work with special education children.
Both the limo and meal at McDonald's were donated to the students.
