64-Year-Old Brainerd Man Dies After Canoe Capsizes
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 64-year-old Brainerd man is dead and a 4-year-old Arizona boy is safe after a canoe they were in capsized on the Gull River north of Baxter, Minn. Sunday afternoon, according to Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office.
At 2:12 p.m., deputies responded to the report of a capsized canoe and two people in the Gull River.
Residents who live near the river heard a cry for help and responded, pulling the boy, of Gilbert, Ariz., out of the river. He was treated at the scene and was taken to Essentia Health in Brainerd.
The 64-year-old man was pulled from the river by paramedics and law enforcement further downstream. He was unresponsive and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. His body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
The victims' identities are being withheld pending notification of family. Both were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation.
