MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – From violent crime being on the rise but arrests being low in Minneapolis to the threat of terrorism at New Year's Eve celebrations across the world, here are the top four stories to know for Jan. 1, 2016.
Violent Crime Up, Arrests Down In Mpls.
Violent crime in Minneapolis is on the rise but the number of people arrested in connection with that crime is down.
The Minneapolis Police Federation president Bob Kroll said he knows why.
Kroll believes officers are not practicing proactive policing. He said officers are safeguarding their jobs by not getting involved in arrests that could place them under scrutiny.
Despite fears of terrorism, people rang in the New Year around the world with fireworks and celebrations.
However, in Munich, Germany police cleared two train stations after they said they received a "serious, imminent threat."
Officials warned of possible suicide bombers and said ISIS was behind the threat.
Cosby Lawyer Claims Charges Politically Motivated
Bill Cosby's lawyer claims the sexual assault case against the comedian was politically motivated, brought by a newly elected district attorney to fulfill a campaign promise.
Cosby was charged Wednesday with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman 12 years ago.
He was released on $1 million bail.
The allegations have left many, especially in the black community, feeling betrayed.
Clemson Takes On Alabama In Nat'l Championship
It looks like Clemson and Alabama will be facing off for the national title.
The Tigers dominated Oklahoma 37-17 in the Orange Bowl Thursday.
Following that win was an even more dominating performance where the Crimson Tide beat Michigan State 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl.
The first and second ranked teams will meet January 11 in Glendale, Arizona.
