4 Minn. Middle Schoolers Take Top Math Honors
PLYMOUTH, Minn. (AP) -- Four Minnesota middle-school students have won top honors in a statewide math competition, and will represent Minnesota in a national contest in May.
The mathletes edged out 122 other students representing 42 schools. The competition was held Saturday in Plymouth.
Two winners were from Wayzata Central Middle School in Plymouth. They're eighth-grader Jenica Zhong and seventh-grader Daniel Qu.
The other two were Utkarsh Koshti of Rosemount Middle School in Rosemount; and Vincent Dzik of Capitol Hill Magnet in St. Paul. Both are in eighth grade
The four will compete in the national contest in Washington, D.C. in May.
The state competition involves timed tests where calculators aren't allowed, and longer problems in which students work in teams.
The competition is part of a program designed to make academic achievement as challenging and prestigious as athletic sports.
