Community Unites To Say 'Thanks' On Veteran's Day
INVER GROVE HEIGHTS (WCCO) -- From the governor to members of Congress to every day citizens, everyone is gathering together to say "Thank you."
Today is Veteran's Day -- a day to recognize and thank all veterans. The official state ceremony took place Thursday morning in Inver Grove Heights , where a couple hundred people joined together to honor the vets. That's where Christine Uhl spent her morning.
Uhl has been in the Minnesota National Guard for 19 years. She returned from her time serving in Iraq, just eight months ago.
Uhl's husband is also in the Guard. The two live in Eagan with their two children, Haley and Tyler.
Uhl said she's just happy to be able to spend Veteran's Day with her kids after being gone for a full year.
"Basically, I am just thinking that I can spend time with my family this year," she said. "Because I wasn't able to last year, so that's what's on my mind today."
Uhl helps make up a third of the country's service members that are women. At the morning's service, Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and other speakers, acknowledged the women serving our country.
Pawlenty was given a standing ovation after his speech. This marks his last Veteran's Day as governor.
