3 Taken To Hospital After Woodbury Apt. Fire

WOODBURY, Minn. (WCCO) -- Three people were taken to the hospital and two cats died in an apartment fire in Woodbury Sunday.

The fire occurred on the third floor of an apartment complex on the 6800 block of Ashwood Road. Police said it was a grease fire that started on the kitchen stove and grew as the renter tried to put it out by throwing water on it.

The fire affected a total of 12 units -- with 11 suffering primarily smoke and water damage.

Two adults and one child were transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and a fourth was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

Residents are being allowed back into the building to retrieve their belongs and some may be able to stay in their homes.

The American Red Cross is currently assisting residents with short-term shelter needs.
