3 Highways Closed In West Central MN Due To Blowing Snow
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Three major highways will close at 4 p.m. Sunday, due to strong winds, blowing snow and whiteout conditions, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
MnDOT, along with the Minnesota State Patrol, announced the closure at 3 p.m. Sunday, adding that no travel is advised in west central Minnesota due to the blizzard-like conditions.
The advisory is for Rice, Steele, Dodge, Mower, Freeborn, Goodhue, Olmsted, Fillmore, Houston, Winona and Wabasha counties.
Interstate 94 from Moorhead to Alexandria, Highway 10 from Moorhead to Detroit Lakes and Highway 210 from Breckenridge to Fergus Falls will close until further notice.
Other highways in west central Minnesota are also in hazardous condition. MnDOT officials say plows will be pulled at dark for safety reasons due to the low visibility.
As a reminder, MnDOT says motorists need to plan accordingly and that when a highway is closed, it is illegal to travel in that area.
Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or sentenced to 90 days in jail. If they require services in order to be rescued from a closed road, additional expenses and penalties will apply.
